All staff in the pre-school have been carefully selected for important personal qualities in addition to their qualifications and experience. They are all warm, caring people who are genuinely friendly and show patience and understanding towards children.
We work in partnership with parents and staff are always available to discuss your child´s day and deal with any queries you may have. The staff work hard to allow them the independence they strive for but within a safe environment.
Early Years Teacher Status and BA Honours Degree in Early Childhood Studies
Hi my name is Sue and I am the education co-ordinator of both of our Pre-School nurseries (Eden court and Pirehill). I have completed the Early years teacher status so am a qualified teacher delivering the education to our young children’s lives. I have over 12 years of experience of working with children along with being a mum to two older boys.
I have achieved paediatric first aid, food hygiene, Safeguarding level 1 and early years foundation stage review for leaders and managers working in the private, voluntary and independent sector.
I am responsible for the day to day education at both of our pre-schools. I ensure that all of the children receive an educated day in a caring and fun way. I fully support and guide all of the staff involved in the pre-school’s overseeing the delivery of the education providing each pre-school with the resources and activities they need each week. I aim to give the children the best possible start in life. I also ensure all development records and observations are carried out.
Working with children is so rewarding because I get to watch them learn and develop. I can support their learning and development so that every child can reach their full potential. I feel a responsibility to give each child the best care, education and support possible so that they can become successful adults.
I am an organised person and enjoy studying for my degree and researching for all new ideas, I like to read and bake with the children. I enjoy coming to work and working within a pre-school setting.

Hi my name is Claire and I am the manager of our Pre-School at Pirehill nursery.
I have 22 years experience of working with children along with being a mum to 3 young children.
I have achieved paediatric first aid, food hygiene, Safeguarding level 1 and level 2, effective team meetings, health and safety unit 1 and 2, moving and handling, EYFS observation and assessment and promoting positive behaviour level 1 and 2.
I am responsible for the day to day running of the pre-school, I ensure a smooth running of the pre-school at all times, ensuring that all policies, procedures and welfare requirements are met at all times. I ensure that planning is delivered in the correct manner for the children in my care to learn and develop, ensuring that all of the children follow the 7 areas of learning within a warm, loving, friendly and welcoming environment that they feel safe in to help them learn and grow. I act as a key worker within the setting completing the children’s individual profiles. I ensure that I build and maintain relationships with past, present and future parents, this includes showing prospective parents around the setting, holding parents evenings and open days to promote Smartys. I am also responsible for the day to day paperwork within the pre-school ensuring the team work well and promoting good working relationships on a professional basis.
I work with children because I enjoy the fulfilment of watching them grow and helping the children learn through all areas of development knowing that I play a large part in giving them the security, love and stimulation they need to learn in their vital early years of learning and preparation for school.
I am a very organised, devoted and caring member of the team, I enjoy caring for all of the children in my care. I offer a warm and welcoming environment to everyone, I feel I am able to offer a sense of ease to all parents and children. I also enjoy being very creative.
As a mum to 3 I have lots of experience and am always willing to offer my personal experience to all of the parents in my setting, I feel I am able to understand and be compassionate to every parent’s individual needs. I really do enjoy coming to work.
NVQ Level 3 and First Class Honours Degree in Adult Nursing (RGN)
Hi my name is Gemma and I am the manager of the Little Stars Nursery. I am also a fully qualified nurse.
I have 12 years experience of working with children including taking time out to achieve my degree and being a mum to my young daughter.
I have achieved my NVQ level 2 and 3 in child care as well as achieving a first class honours degree in adult nursing (RGN), I have paediatric first aid, food hygiene, Safeguarding level 1, EYFS observation and assessment, EYFS training course and moving and handling.
I am currently sharing my time being a manager at our existing baby building and being a nurse working within the hospital. Once our new nursery opens I will be managing this full time.
I have always loved and enjoyed caring for children. I joined Smartys when I was 17 to pursue a career in childcare and to help support the family business. I enjoy playing and interacting with the children in particular babies along with building up trusting relationships with parents giving them the reassurance that their babies are nurtured and loved within the setting. I enjoy implementing new ideas into the setting in particular arts, crafts and messy play.
I feel that since becoming a new mum I am able to offer and support all of our new parents as they make the transition of going back to work. I absolutely love being a mum and enjoy interacting and sharing the precious moments as I watch the children grow and develop.
NVQ Level 3Hi my name is Alison and I am the deputy manager at our before and after school / holiday club. I am also a nursery nurse in our Pirehill Pre-School nursery.
I have years experience of working with children along with being a mum to two older children.
I have achieved paediatric first aid, Safeguarding level 1, food hygiene, health and safety in childcare setting and promoting the health and hygiene of children.
I am responsible and enjoy aiding the manager with the day to day running of the school and holiday club.
