All staff in the pre-school have been carefully selected for important personal qualities in addition to their qualifications and experience. They are all warm, caring people who are genuinely friendly and show patience and understanding towards children.
We work in partnership with parents and staff are always available to discuss your child´s day and deal with any queries you may have. The staff work hard to allow them the independence they strive for but within a safe environment.
Early Years Teacher Status and BA Honours Degree in Early Childhood Studies
Hi my name is Sue and I am the education co-ordinator of both of our Pre-School nurseries (Eden court and Pirehill). I have completed the Early years teacher status so am a qualified teacher delivering the education to our young children’s lives. I have over 12 years of experience of working with children along with being a mum to two older boys.
I have achieved paediatric first aid, food hygiene, Safeguarding level 1 and early years foundation stage review for leaders and managers working in the private, voluntary and independent sector.
I am responsible for the day to day education at both of our pre-schools. I ensure that all of the children receive an educated day in a caring and fun way. I fully support and guide all of the staff involved in the pre-school’s overseeing the delivery of the education providing each pre-school with the resources and activities they need each week. I aim to give the children the best possible start in life. I also ensure all development records and observations are carried out.
Working with children is so rewarding because I get to watch them learn and develop. I can support their learning and development so that every child can reach their full potential. I feel a responsibility to give each child the best care, education and support possible so that they can become successful adults.
I am an organised person and enjoy studying for my degree and researching for all new ideas, I like to read and bake with the children. I enjoy coming to work and working within a pre-school setting.

Hi my name is Claire and I am the manager of our Pre-School at Pirehill nursery.
I have 22 years experience of working with children along with being a mum to 3 young children.
I have achieved paediatric first aid, food hygiene, Safeguarding level 1 and level 2, effective team meetings, health and safety unit 1 and 2, moving and handling, EYFS observation and assessment and promoting positive behaviour level 1 and 2.
I am responsible for the day to day running of the pre-school, I ensure a smooth running of the pre-school at all times, ensuring that all policies, procedures and welfare requirements are met at all times. I ensure that planning is delivered in the correct manner for the children in my care to learn and develop, ensuring that all of the children follow the 7 areas of learning within a warm, loving, friendly and welcoming environment that they feel safe in to help them learn and grow. I act as a key worker within the setting completing the children’s individual profiles. I ensure that I build and maintain relationships with past, present and future parents, this includes showing prospective parents around the setting, holding parents evenings and open days to promote Smartys. I am also responsible for the day to day paperwork within the pre-school ensuring the team work well and promoting good working relationships on a professional basis.
I work with children because I enjoy the fulfilment of watching them grow and helping the children learn through all areas of development knowing that I play a large part in giving them the security, love and stimulation they need to learn in their vital early years of learning and preparation for school.
I am a very organised, devoted and caring member of the team, I enjoy caring for all of the children in my care. I offer a warm and welcoming environment to everyone, I feel I am able to offer a sense of ease to all parents and children. I also enjoy being very creative.
As a mum to 3 I have lots of experience and am always willing to offer my personal experience to all of the parents in my setting, I feel I am able to understand and be compassionate to every parent’s individual needs. I really do enjoy coming to work.
NVQ Level 3Hi my name is Alison and I am also the manager of our Pre-School at Pirehill nursery along with being the manager for our before and after school club. I am also a fully qualified chef.
I have 6 years experience of working with children along with being a mum to 3 older children.
I have achieved paediatric first aid, food hygiene, Safeguarding level 1 and level 2, effective out of schools club, health and safety unit 1 and 2, EYFS observation and assessment, Leadership and managers, business admin level 1, CAF and ISA training and promoting positive behaviour level 1 and 2.
I am responsible for the day to day running of the school / holiday club and share the responsibility for the day to day running of the pre-school along with Claire, I ensure a smooth running of the school club / holiday club and pre-school at all times ensuring that all policies, procedures and welfare requirements are met at all times. I ensure that planning is delivered in the correct manner for the children in my care to learn and develop, ensuring that all of the children follow the 7 areas of learning. I act as a key worker within the setting completing the children’s individual profiles. I ensure that I build and maintain relationships with past, present and future parents. I work closely with the teachers at Pirehill First School and follow all requests that are given from senior management, I am responsible for the organising of the school runs, taking all enquiries for the school club, showing parents around the pre-school or the school club and ensuring everyone (parents, staff and most important the children) in my care are looked after well.
I came to Smartys as the nursery chef and following many fond times of working with the children I decided to complete my level 3. From here I have enjoyed every minute of working with the children, helping and guiding them through their young lives. I really enjoy caring for the children, building the strong bonds with them and thoroughly enjoy every aspect of my job.
I am a hard working and devoted member of the team, I enjoy caring for all of the children in my care. I offer a warm and welcoming environment to everyone, I enjoy being creative and am able to work in all areas of the company.
As a mum to 3 and nannie to 1, I have lots of experience and am always willing to help everyone, I like coming to work.
NVQ Level 3
Hi my name is Sam and I am a nursery nurse at our Pirehill Pre-School Nursery.
I have 5 years experience of working with children at Smartys.
I have achieved paediatric first aid, food hygiene, Safeguarding level 1, EYFS training, autism awareness and introduction to music with babies and young children.
I am responsible for supporting the room supervisor in the day to day running of the upstairs rooms, ensuring everyone receives a warm and welcoming environment, guiding staff in their roles, ensuring all children’s needs are met along with completing planning and development records for children, building good relationships with parents, children and staff.
I love looking after children and as an aunty to 5 young children I am a very caring individual who finds it very rewarding helping children to develop and grow. I am a very artistic person who enjoys being creative, I am a motivated member of staff who works well in a team, very organised and a positive person.
I always try to present myself in a professional way, and any spare time I have I enjoy spending it with my nieces and nephews. I really enjoy my job.
